7 Ways to Make Fitness Fun for the Whole Family

If your kids moan and groan at the thought of exercise, you might have to get a little creative to help them maintain a healthy weight. Here are just seven ways to make fitness fun for the whole family!

  1. Hop on a Bike

Learning how to ride a bike is a childhood rite of passage, but it’s common for parents to let them rust in the garage after the initial excitement has worn off. Don’t make this mistake! Encourage your kids to keep cycling, and buy or rent bikes for the entire clan so that everyone can enjoy pedaling around the park.

  1. Play Outdoor Games

While there’s nothing wrong with board games or movie nights, there are also more active ways that you can bond as a family. For example, you can play tag or hide-and-seek in the backyard, or you can set up the sprinkler for some old-fashioned summer fun. Anything that gets the kids off the couch is a good idea.

  1. Grab a Basketball

Sports are one of the easiest ways to encourage physical fitness in children. They won’t even realize that they’re strengthening their hearts, lungs, muscles and joints as they try to score a goal or home run. Mom and dad can get in on the action, too; there are adult athletic leagues for just about every sport out there.

  1. Offer Incentives

Is your teenager too cool for relay races and hula-hoop contests? Don’t be afraid to bribe them. For example, you might offer a prize for the highest score or the fastest time, or you might agree to a later curfew or driving practice if they participate in a “family activity day” once a week.

  1. Buy Different Video Games

If your kids are attached at the hip to their video game consoles, consider buying interactive games that will encourage physical activity. While a bowling or dancing game won’t be quite as effective as actually going out and doing those activities for real, they’re still better than sedentary games.

  1. Adopt a Pet

This will require a certain level of commitment, of course, but your kids will be less likely to object to exercise when it comes in the form of walking the dog or chasing the ferret around the house. Just make sure that they’re responsible enough to handle the other aspects of pet care, too. You don’t want to be left holding the leash every day while your kids slack off.

  1. Rotate Activities

Let your children take turns deciding what kind of physical activity that they’d like to try next. Not only will it expand your family’s horizons, but it will also help your children become active participants in their own fitness. They’ll always be on the lookout for fun new things to try.

These are just a few ways to get the whole family involved with your wellness goals. From toddlers to teenagers, everyone can benefit from regular exercise, so use these ideas to encourage healthy lifestyles!
